MY CITY

RIO DE JANEIRO

GUSTAVO CASTRO

Brazilian architect + multidisciplinary artist Gustavo Castro first caught our eye with his stunning Pipa (Kite) Stool, a design inspired by the simplicity of a popular children's toy in Brazil. Gustavo's first project won him the Young Upcoming Brazilian Talents 2018 award, and his designs are now available internationally.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo has a strong sense of pride in his home city. We figured he would be a great person to show F1FTY around and we weren't disappointed. From inspirational community projects, to cool bars and breathtaking architecture, here are a few of Gustavo's recommendations...

CASA AMARELA

@casaamarelaprovidencia

"This amazing place is Casa Amarela - a gallery / community centre that promotes cultural, social and educational activities in the favela of Morro da Providência. Artists are also welcomed to stay on the 'Moon' in exchange for workshops for children in the favela."

PARQUE BURLE MARX

@parque_burlemarx

"The former residence of the famous Brazilian plastic and landscape artist is a unique place in the world. The place has become a park that brings together art, sculptures and an incredible green area with tropical plants, open to visitors."

PEDRA DO ARPOADOR

Sundowner

"Located at one end of Ipanema Beach, it is the best-known place in Rio De Janeiro to enjoy the sunset. The stone, which extends into the sea, is a simple place with little structure, but it is exactly this simplicity that impresses. The idea is to sit somewhere on the rock and enjoy the evening with a beer with friends."

THE MAZE

@themaze_rio

"This mosaic-covered house is a jazz bar, a guesthouse and a restaurant, at least sometimes. It's open for visits regardless with a small fee. It's in a favela, one considered safe, and has amazing views."

MUSEU DO AMANHÃ

An architectural gem

"Designed by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava, the idea of the 'Museum of Tomorrow' is that the building feels almost floating on the sea, like a ship, a bird or a plant."
