MY CITY

FLORENCE

MICHELE GUALTIERI

Michele Gualtieri is a professional chef, with experience working in some of the most prestigious restaurants in Italy, as well as London.

When it comes to pasta, though, he learned everything from his Nonna, a true pasta maker from Emilia-Romagna, who passed her love and expertise for authentic Italian pasta on to her grandson.

Michele now runs pasta making workshops in Florence, where pupils learn everything from the secret to achieving an amazing pasta dough, to an introduction to different types of closing - ravioli, tortellini, cappellacci... the list goes on!

We figured Michele might know some pretty amazing places in Florence.  Here are some of his favourite places in the city...

TRIPPERIA POLLINI

Florentine street food

"Lampredotto is the most famous street food of the city. It is made with the  stomach of the cow and served in a bun with salsa verde and chilli oil. Something that you can't miss in Florence!"

LOCALE

Cocktails in an Ex-Medici house

"This place became the best cocktail bar in Italy, Locale is situated in an ex 'Medici' house (Medici being the important family of Florence in the renaissance time). Ask the bartender for a tour of the building -they will take you to the underground floor and they will show you part of the old house. Try the Cocktail of Florence 'Negroni'."

PHARMACY OF SANTA MARIA NOVELLA

A slice of history

"Today it is considered the oldest historical pharmacy in all of Europe, having been operating without interruption for over 4 centuries, as well as one of the oldest commercial businesses ever. A restoration project has also been launched for some monumental rooms."

GIARDINO DI BOBOLI

The quintessential Italian garden

"The Boboli Gardens is a historical park of the city of Florence. Originally designed for the Medici, it represents one of the first and most important examples of the 'Italian Garden', which later served as inspiration for many European courts. It also has large fountains and caves, among them the splendid Buontalenti grotto built by the artist, architect and sculptor Bernardo Buontalenti between 1536 and 1608."

SAN LORENZO MARKET

Market life

"I love visiting several markets - San Lorenzo Market (an inside and outside market) is one of my favourites, but I would also recommend Florence Antique Market, Fortezza da Basso Antique Market, and Flower Market."
