Brazilian photographer Erick Alves calls the city of São Paulo home – a city so immense it is actually the most populous city in the Americas + the world’s 4th largest city by population. The place is also a melting pot of people, being home to a vibrant mix of different cultures + communities, offering up a whole host of interesting subject matter for an eager photographer.

Always a photography lover, Erick started out experimenting with street photography – (when his amazing shots of the city first caught our eye) – before moving on to specialise in portraiture.

A few years ago, he became more serious about his photography + has been perfecting his craft ever since. His shots always seem to offer a dramatic vibe, using unusual angles + cooler tones to create his unique style, while remaining committed to capturing the essence of the individual in front of the lens.

Born + raised in SP, Erick is a proud Paulistano + knows the city inside out. We asked him to share some insider tips for the best places to check out…

BAR DO COFRE

"The bar is nothing less than the safe in the basement of an extinct bank. With its heavy door, it brings the feeling of being in a different reality from day to day on the surface of SP. It is not a tourist spot + known to few, but it is one of the most incredible places in the city."

PINACOTECA

"The ideal destination for art + culture lovers in general. The exhibition center has several national works in a wide space. It is another historical heritage of São Paulo."

CASARÃO DO VINIL

"What was supposed to be a store has become a nice place for the old school. With numerous titles + musical genres, the place is the biggest LP specialist in the city. Perhaps even in the country."
